Back to case studies

Little Angel Theatre is an award-winning puppet theatre for children in London. A Froebel Trust grant was given to the theatre to set up creative play sessions for local parents/carers and their babies and young children.

A production, called The Bed (based on Sylvia Plath’s The Bed Book) ran for 3 weeks in the theatre's studio space, aimed at babies and young children aged 6 months to 3 years old.

The aim of the project was to give parents and carers the confidence to play creatively with their children; to support the connection between parent/carer and baby/toddler and enhance the child's development and learning through creative play.

The Bed - show & family workshops return for 2023

Treasure baskets

Project leaders used treasure baskets to stimulate and support play between parents/ carers and their children. Treasure baskets are collections of objects which offer young babies a rich variety of material within their reach. The baby or young child can choose what to explore in their own way and at their own pace.

Role of the adult

A Froebelian approach values the contribution of adults - offering ‘freedom with guidance’ to enrich play as a learning context. Creativity is about children representing their own ideas in their own way, supported by a nurturing environment and people.

Stay and play

The project aimed to develop parents' and carers' confidence to play with their young children.

Over 4,000 families came to see The Bed and took part in the creative stay and play sessions. Froebel Trust funding allowed for free tickets to be offered to families facing financial barriers, making the production and play sessions inclusive for the local community.

The project leaders worked with local nursery schools and with parent/carer baby/toddler groups in close proximity to the theatre, in an area of London which is one of the 20% most deprived wards in the UK.

“...what is this play of the little ones? It is the great drama of life itself...”
