This project develops an approach for positively engaging parents in the Froebelian Occupation of woodwork.

Tuffkid Nursery in London supports both mainstream and children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) through an integrated approach to learning through play. Educators at the setting were awarded a Froebel Trust Practice Support Grant to further develop woodwork in their inclusive curriculum offer.

Although educators at the nursery had adapted their woodwork area to be inclusive for every child, some parents/carers of children with additional needs were reluctant for their child to take part in woodwork activities.

The project involved sharing information about the benefits of engaging with woodwork through an online seminar and also offering practical workshops for all parents and carers to experience woodwork for themselves.

This approach raised awareness of the deep learning that takes place during woodwork and the benefits for all children.

"Children thrive when their network of support works together and there is consistency. Strengthening this network will allow SEND children to partake in the magic that is woodwork. The lessons learned will pave a lifelong path of curiosity, exploration and satisfaction." Project leader at Tuffkid Nursery

A final report and video on the project is now available.
