Oliver Thomas Nursery School and Children's Centre were awarded a Froebel Trust grant to develop nature based experiences for children and the local community at their inner London nursery.
Project Summary
This maintained nursery school in Newham, London has developed their Froebelian practice and extended their children's interest in nature.
Using a Froebel trust grant, the project leaders provided training for their staff, allowing them to deliver nature based experiences for children according to the Froebelian approach. They used the setting's garden (focusing on the Froebelian occupation of woodwork), time around the fire pit and also organised trips for the children. The practitioners aimed to develop Froebel's occupations in the setting.
The school included the wider community in this initiative using their outreach team. Children and families were invited to outdoors sessions where a Froebelian approach to outdoor learning was introduced. The educators also planned to hold community events at their nursery school, to engage the wider community in their work.
You can read their final report published in March 2025.
